The Great Loop Beckons this Year's New and Returning Loopers
The Great Loop: a 6,000-mile journey through some of the best and most beautiful sites throughout Canada and the Eastern United States, is gaining in popularity as more and more boating enthusiasts are setting out to experience all that these North American waterways have to offer. Through open waters, natural and manufactured channels, inland rivers, and vast lakes, the Great Loop tests boaters of all kinds as they head out to see for themselves why this route has been navigated since as early as 1898.
Circumnavigating parts of the Eastern United States and Canada, Loopers are able to experience North American landmarks and waterways spanning from the Great Lakes to the Florida Keys. From the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway to Chesapeake Bay to the New York Canal, Loopers travel northwards to the Great Lakes before returning south via inland rivers to the Gulf Coast.
Enthusiasts in all manner of vessels have navigated the Loop, earning the title of Looper upon completion. From sailboats and powerboats to kayaks and stand-up paddleboards, the Loop has become a favourite for boaters, even becoming a route they choose to complete again and again. While some travellers prefer to navigate the Loop in line with the seasons, experiencing the best part of each season in the best locations over a year, many have completed it in as little as six weeks!
Approximately 200 people complete the Loop each year. Still, the popularity of this adventure-packed course has only increased since 2020, as participants can craft the experience to fit their schedule, accommodating family, work, and so forth while on the journey. In fact, there are three smaller loops that novice boaters can complete to get their feet wet before embarking on the entire Loop.
America's Great Loop Cruisers' Association (AGLCA), founded in 1999, educates boaters about the Loop itself and how to plan for a successful journey. It also assists boaters as they journey around the Loop. With interactive maps, a complete list of marinas, access to Harbour Hosts and a private Facebook group, a mobile app, podcast, and even a cost calculator, there are so many resources designed to help boaters of all types prepare, plan, cruise, and make the most of this incredible experience.
Some Loopers have gone on to create helpful videos showcasing the highs and lows of the journey, providing tips and tricks for those embarking on the Loop for the first time!
